There are 62 species of Manzanita, but the one most common in the Tahoe basin is the Greenleaf Manzanita. It occurs on most every trail and prefers open or partially shaded areas, and may provide a full meadow of Manzanita.
Flowers: Small cluster of pink bells May-June, depending on elevation. Supposedly edible.
Size: Bush to 10'
Leaves: Dark green ovate about 1-1/2". May be withered after lying under winter snow
Distinguishing features: Dark maroon-red smooth stems.
